Diablo is an action packed role-playing video game series developed by Blizzard Entertainment. The devilish, hack-and-slash game has sold 25 million copies worldwide. Three games make up the series: Diablo, Diablo II, and Diablo III. All three games are action role-playing games set in the fantasy world of Sanctuary. Diablo is probably the most well-known example of the action role-playing game genre. It is arguably the first game that successfully combined the classic role-playing style with action gameplay and has a very short learning curve. This general action inspired concept has motivated a plethora of other games with similar gameplay. The series takes place in similar geographic areas, with several common areas including the town of Tristram and the region of Mount Arreat. There are many features that are universal in the Diablo gaming series. Diablo heavily relies on a constant search for better weapons and armor, known as loot. Items are randomly generated and usually have many attributes assigned to them. The series focuses on the battle between the humans living on Sanctuary and the Prime Evils, demons who are led by Diablo, the series' chief antagonist. The humans are occasionally aided by angels, notably the archangel of justice, Tyrael. The characters in the world of Sanctuary are primarily humans, angels, and various classes of demons and monsters. There are sixteen levels of the dungeon, divided into four areas. Each area has a different appearance, architecture, light level, monster combinations, and musical soundtrack. Diablo is highly re-playable due to its randomly generated level map layouts, monsters, and items. In addition, in single-player mode there are only three core quests as the rest of them are drawn from several pools, making it impossible to complete every quest in one play through the game. Diablo may be loosely considered a rogue-like action game, with realtime gameplay, graphics, and sound.
