Gothic is been one of the most popular action role-playing franchises available across Windows, Xbox 360 and PlayStation three. The Gothic series began as somewhat of a cult hit and gained popularity and notoriety throughout the entirety of the series from the first Gothic which was released in 2001 up to the latest version of Gothic Arcania: Gothic for which was released in 2010. The premise of the game involves humans who are in a special medieval fantasy world in which they are losing an ongoing war against the orcs. The player plays as a human who is forced to work in a labor camp guarded by 12 magicians. Due to complications with the war the King eventually has no choice but to trust the militia within these prisoners and to eventually start trading with the convicts from the penal camp. The convicts eventually divide themselves into smaller colonies and the player will have to choose alliances and expand their character based off of the colonies to become available to them through the game. Making the right decisions award allows you to advance the adventure and expand on your character story. The series continues to expand off of this initial story offering up similar gameplay elements. Gamers really enjoyed the very first Gothic game because it was so open-ended and innovative for its time. The series continues to get graphically better and more expensive as it goes on and many fans of games such as Morrowind, living in two worlds will most likely enjoy this title as well. The gameplay is similar to what a single player RPG today should be only with slightly outdated graphics. All the same the story is great and the open-ended nature of the game really lets players dictate exactly what they would like to do. What's really special about this series is not only the fact that it spans over nine years and some severe graphical improvements, but because it is a true pioneer in the RPG genre. Gothic started as a game which made players believed that there was almost limitless possibilities for their gameplay. It is truly one of the classic RPG series that is a must play if you've already played through the Elder scrolls series and enjoyed it. Playing through the earlier games will really bring you back to an earlier type of gaming but the story will suck you in and show you everything you've been missing out on in this series.
